All commercial rafting operations in New Zealand are required to comply with the safety standards administered by Maritime New Zealand. These are audited by Maritime New Zealand annually.

A licensed operator, Queenstown Rafting is recognised as a leader in the field of river safety and proactive risk management.  The company actively contributes to the development of New Zealand rafting standards.

Queenstown Rafting run a minimum of two raft boats per trip as well as a safety kayaker on every Shotover and Landsborough River trip (although a safety kayaker is only needed for high water levels on the Kawarau River). Queenstown Rafting annually update various white water rafting equipment to ensure equipment is of a high and safe standard.

All Queenstown Rafting guides must meet company standards to be employed.

These include:

  • Be First Aid and Swift Water Rescued trained
  • Registered with the New Zealand Rafting Association.
  • Be qualified under the NZ Guide Qualification at Grade 4-5 Level
  • Completed Swift Water Training by N.Z.R.A (New Zealand Rafting Association)
  • Taken part in an annual in-house rescue training session
  • Attended a refresher First Aid course if necessary

Each guide is carefully chosen on the basis of their skill and experience, their ability to make sound decisions and their ability to communicate and identify with our clients.

Company Safety & Health Policy

Queenstown Rafting Ltd is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all personnel, clients and visitors.

The Occupational Safety & Health Act requires Queenstown Rafting to identify hazards to employees and others.

Hazards identified are recorded and communicated to customers and staff as appropriate. Employees are required to continue to monitor and be familiar with all listed hazards and discuss additions or modifications to the list with the Rafting Operations Manager.

Management will:

  • comply with all relevant health and safety legislation, standards and codes of practice
  • support and encourage employee consultation and participation in health and safety
  • support the safe and early return to work of injured employees where the work is available and the injury does not restrict the employee from successfully carrying out their duties
  • enable staff to elect a health and safety representative and be involved in the hazard management process 
  • provide health and safety training and supervision

Staff will assist in the minimisation of work place injuries by:

  • thinking carefully of consequences before acting and avoid taking unnecessary risks
  • adhering to all company health and safety guidelines, policies and procedures
  • participating in health and safety training when required
  • adopting safe work practices and encourage others to do the same
  • reporting injuries promptly and accurately
  • actively contribute to hazard identification and management
